the interasia concept

InterAsia as a concept, paradigm and empirical framework, works to re-envision the vast Asian expanse as an interconnected geographical formation that transcends conventional academic and geopolitical labels and divisions into East, West, Central, Eurasia, Northeast, South and Southeast. It seeks to highlight connections and continuities, as well as divergences and differences, while remaining grounded in robust knowledge of contexts and spaces that overlap, merge, converge and disconnect as outcomes of historical and contemporary processes and forces. These contexts and spaces also include complex infrastructures and landscapes that transcend universities and include formal and informal practices that produce knowledge and shape local, regional and global realities.

Why InterAsia?

The ambition of transregional and transdisciplinary knowledge production emphasizes the study of issues and geographies that do not fit neatly into existing divisions of academia or the world. It encourages the production of scholarship that addresses world regions and peoples neglected or marginalized by the standard divisions of the world and long histories that have been ignored because they do not fit prevailing “regional optics” or civilizational chronologies. It recognizes terrains that are not spatially compact, such as trade routes, waterways, and communities of co-religionists, but that may have strong territorial characteristics. Finally, while decentering the unit of analysis from both “regions” and “nation-states”, it is attentive to ongoing processes of regionalization and re-regionalization as well as various ways in which the nation-state may be asserting itself locally and globally.

Evolution

In 2007 the Social Science Research Council (New York) began developing what became the InterAsia Program and the InterAsia Partnership (IAP). The IAP evolved into a network of institutions collaborating to support individual fellows, network researchers through workshops, summer schools and academies and organize the InterAsian Connections international conference series.

Governance

As of April 2021, Secretariat duties for the IAP moved to the Arab Council for the Social Sciences (ACSS), based in Beirut, Lebanon, presenting a new set of opportunities for the partnership as it is also forced to contend with an evolving set of global challenges. Critically, basing the Secretariat at the ACSS will ensure more South-South collaborations and will work to embed InterAsia activities into larger conversations and intellectual endeavors in the Global South.
